HOMESTEADING #1 Risk is Contaminated Water

#1 HOMESTEADING RISK – CLEAR BUT CONTAMINATED DRINKING WATER
The Quality of Your Drinking Water – UNKNOWN

Potentially harmful and even deadly water contaminants exist in many homestead groundwater as well as municipal water supplies

WATER CONTAMINANTS MAY BE INVISIBLE, ODORLESS AND TASTELESS

  • Don't Mistake Sparkling Clear-Looking Water for Clean and Safe Water
  • Don't Mistake Odorless Water for Clean and Safe Water
  • Don't Mistake Fresh-Tasting Water for Clean and Safe Water

WHAT’S WRONG WITH THE DRINKING WATER ON YOUR HOMESTEAD?
Hopefully Nothing, but Consider These Facts

Unpurified, the drinking water you consume on your homestead may contain any or all of the following harmful elements:

  • Protozoan parasites – such as Giardia and Cryptosporidium. They have been detected in 90% of water tested in US and Canada.
  • Toxic Bacteria – This includes campylobacter, E. Coli, V. cholera and salmonella.
  • Heavy Metals – such as chromium, aluminum, cadmium, copper, lead and mercury.
  • Toxic Chemicals – such as trihalomethanes, VOC’s (Volatile Organic Compounds), detergents and pesticides. The filters presented here remove 99.9999% of this category of contaminant.
  • Radiologicals – such as Radon 222
  • Viruses – Because of their extremely small size, these extremely small organisms are the most difficult to remove.

USING WATER FROM A LOCAL MUNICIPAL UTILITY ON YOUR HOMESTEAD?
Startling Statistics About Municipal Water Contamination in the US

Is your municipal water source contaminated? – Consider the following:

  • In the US, 10,00 violations of EPA regulations regarding municipal water treatment are reported annually
  • A study by the Medical College of Wisconsin and the US EPA concluded that about 7.1 million americans suffer nausia and diarrhea each year from bad water. As many as 1200 people die as a result.
  • A study in USA today special report by Pete Eisler states
    • About 40,000 of the 170,000 water systems surveyed and serving about 58 million people violated minimum Federal, State or Municipal requirements and purity standards.
    • About 9,000 had significant water violations and posed a serious threat to public health.
  • In 1998, The Environmental Working Group studied water in 29 major cities. Water in all 29 cities had traces of Weed Killer.
  • Researchers from the US EPA and the National Geographic Survey have now found traces of antibiotics, birth control drugs, antidepressants and even caffeine in water samples taken across the country.
  • The US EPA has identified more than 2000 potential contaminants in water supplies from pesticides and antidepressants to birth-control drugs and caffeine.

Researchers at the Ralph Nader Institute state. “Any chemical we use in our society will eventually end up in our water supply.”
The US Council on Environmental Quality states, "many illnesses in our past, that could not be linked to any probable cause, have now been linked to toxins in our drinking water".

USING GROUNDWATER FROM A LOCAL WELL ON YOUR HOMESTEAD?
Startling Statistics About Municipal Water Contamination in the US

Is groundwater on your homestead contaminated? – Consider the following:

About half the population in the United States relies to some extent on groundwater as a source of drinking water.

One of the best known classes of groundwater contaminants includes petroleum-based fuels such as gasoline and diesel.Nationally, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has recorded that there have been over 400,000 confirmed releases of petroleum-based fuels from leaking underground storage tanks.

Fertilizers and pesticides applied to crops eventually may reach underlying aquifers, particularly if the aquifer is shallow and not "protected" by an overlying layer of lowpermeability material, such as clay. Drinking-water wells located close to cropland sometimes are contaminated by these agricultural chemicals.

Some groundwater pollution occurs naturally. The toxic metal arsenic, for instance, is commonly found in the sediments or rock of the western United States, and can be present in groundwater at concentrations that exceed safe levels for drinking water.

Radon gas is a radioactive product of the decay of naturally occurring uranium in the Earth's crust. Groundwater entering a house through a home water-supply system might release radon indoors where it could be breathed.

Another common class of groundwater contaminants includes chemicals known as chlorinated solvents. One example of a chlorinated solvent is dry-cleaning fluid, also known as perchloroethylene. These chemicals are similar to petroleum hydrocarbons in that they are made up of carbon and hydrogen atoms, but the molecules also have chlorine atoms in their structure.

A REPORT FROM THE US CENTER FOR DISEASE CONTROL (CDC) THAT EVERY HOMESTEADER USING GROUNDWATER SHOULD READ

Water-related Diseases and Contaminants in Private Wells Over 15 million U.S. households obtain their drinking water from private wells (1), which are not covered by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations that protect public drinking water systems.

Although the United States has one of the safest drinking water supplies in the world, sources of drinking water can still become contaminated through naturally occurring chemicals and minerals (for example, arsenic, radon), local land use practices (for example, pesticides, chemicals, animal feeding operations), malfunctioning wastewater treatment systems (for example, sewer overflows), and other sources.

Contamination of a private well can impact not only the household served by the well, but also nearby households using the same aquifer. Owners of private wells are responsible for ensuring that their water is safe from contaminants.

Private wells should be checked every year for mechanical problems, cleanliness, and the presence of coliform bacteria, nitrates, and any other contaminants of local concern. A local health department or water well systems professional can help ensure delivery of high-quality water from an existing well or, if needed, help locate and construct a new well in a safer area.

The presence of contaminants in water can lead to health issues, including gastrointestinal illness, reproductive problems, and neurological disorders. Infants, young children, pregnant women, the elderly, and people whose immune systems are compromised because of AIDS, chemotherapy, or transplant medications, may be especially susceptible to illness from some contaminants.

The Top 5 Causes of Waterborne Outbreaks in Private Groundwater Wells

  1. Hepatitis A (CDC, CDC-water)
  2. Giardia intestinalis (CDC, CDC-water)
  3. Shigella spp. (CDC, CDC-water)
  4. E. coli 0157:H7 (CDC, CDC-water, EPA )
  5. Tied for 5th: Campylobacter jejuni (CDC, CDC-water) and Salmonella serotype Typhimurium (CDC, CDC-water)

More well water-related pathogens and chemicals:

  • Cryptosporidium (CDC, CDC-water)
  • Enterovirus (CDC, CDC-water)
  • Lead (CDC-ATSDR, CDC-water)
  • Nitrate (CDC-water, EPA )
  • Norovirus (CDC, CDC-water)
  • Radon (CDC-ATSDR, CDC-water)
  • Rotavirus (CDC, CDC-water, WHO )
This was Worth Repeating:
EPA regulations that protect public drinking water systems do not apply to privately owned wells or any other individual water system. As a result, owners of individual water systems are responsible for ensuring that their water is safe from contaminants

TESTING THE WATER ON YOUR HOMESTEAD – MONEY WELL SPENT OR WASTED

Testing - not a bad idea but don’t assume that one simple test will give you all the answers you need – here’s why:

  • Testing is not comprehensive.
Having your water tested for bacteriological contaminants is no guarantee that it is not still contaminated and a threat to your health. Many other serious contaminants exist and testing for each one would be prohibitively expensive.
  • Test results are only for that sample.
Most water contamination disasters are the results of “incidents”, isolated failures in whatever system you or the community depend on for safe water. You can’t test all the water you drink.
  • Water tests are expensive.
    • The cost of a simple test to determine the existence of harmful bacteria is about $250 pesos.
    • The cost of a comprehensive test could run as high as $3,000 pesos

The common-sense response to the possibility of contamination is to protect yourself from that possibility. It’s just sensible.
