Berkeys Top 100 Scarce Things
Berkeys will become extremely valuable when water become scarce due to pollution and/or rationing

HOMESTEADING - WHAT'S ESSENTIAL - IT'S NOT THE SAME FOR EVERYONE

As much as anything, homesteading is a lifestyle that reflects a state of mind. and an opinion about the world and our place in it.

Homesteading situations vary tremendously.

What may be scarce for you may be in abundance elsewhere.

Living on 40 acres, as I have in Northern Minnesota , the land of ten thousand lakes, water was not scarce, however, having an adequate source of fuel during the winter could be real challenge.

Living as I now do, part time in Mexico, the winters are mild and houses do not have a source of heating other than what a stove may produce, but water is scarce and of questionable quality.

In both places I used a high quality water filter. There is no such thing as "pristine" except in the minds of the poets and bottled water ad copy writers.

Determine for yourself what will be in short supply and prepare for it.

WATER - A RELIABLE AND ADEQUATE SOURCE OF SAFE DRINKING WATER IS ESSENTIAL NO MATTER WHERE YOU HOMESTEAD

Below is a list of 100 things that this author thought might be essential and might rapidly disappear during a national emergency of fairly long duration. Water is number two on his list.

Water can become scarce

  • if municipal sources fail due to electrical or mechanical failure or from contamination
  • if local sources, such as wells, become contaminated
  • if groundwater becomes depleted
  • if bottled water companies fail to produce adequate supplies of bottled water for those dependant on it.
